How to use the Replay Buffer?

The latest update of Open Broadcaster Software, for Windows, added a new feature called the “Replay Buffer”. This neat little option allows you to save the last X seconds of Video and Audio to your disk on the press of a button. You might know this feature already from Nvidia’s Shadowplay or other Software.

You first have to configure the amount of seconds that should be kept in the buffer, thats in the Broadcast Settings of OBS. For example the last 30, 60 or 120 seconds:

Then configure the “Save Replay Buffer Hotkey” so you can tell OBS to save the buffer to your disk, thats in the Hotkey settings of OBS:

Now in the OBS interface you can use the small black arrow, right of Start Recording, to get a little dropdown menu that lets you start the Replay Buffer or also setup a Hotkey to Start and Stop it. As you can see, you can of course also still record a normal video file at the same time:

As soon as you start the Buffer, OBS will start the recording but it wont save anything to your disk, until you press the “Save Replay Buffer Hotkey”. When something worth saving has happened, you press the Hotkey and OBS will save the last X seconds to disk. X is of course the amount of seconds you selected earlier.

This would for example allow you to save the last 3 Headshots you made, or that awesome block you landed, that great heal that saved your mate to disk, without having to edit an hour or more long video later.

A word of advice though. I would probably recommend to do a normal recording at the same time. So if something happens that took longer than your selected Replay Buffer time, you can still cut it out later. Also please do not select ridiculous long Buffer values. The estimator can only roughly show you the estimated RAM usage of your current settings, and if you run out of ram, OBS has to write the Buffer to disk which is of course only suboptimal. At the same time dont worry too much, 5 minutes or even a bit more should be no problem for most people. And you can of course test if its a problem at all.

So, thanks to Palana, we can now use QuickSync, x264 or nvenc (and soon AMD VCE) to create replays, or save snippets for youtube. Have fun fiddling with the feature and let me know in the comments for what you use it!
